COUNTY OK’S HIRING 4 MORE PROSECUTORS FOR ENVIRONMENTAL DIVISION

“Harris County Commissioners Court on Tuesday unanimously approved the hiring of four new prosecutors to investigate environmental crimes following two recent massive chemical fires caught the county unprepared.

District Attorney Kim Ogg, who unsuccessfully lobbied court members in February to approve 100 new prosecutor hires, found a more receptive audience to her argument that the county needed to more aggressively bring charges against polluters. The request also included two investigators and two support staff.” story by Zach Despart

The condemned will still be able to utter last words on the gurney, but any written statements will be tucked away in the prisoners’ belongings and not shared with the public.” story by Keri Blakinger

TEXAS HOUSE VOTES TO REDUCE MARIJUANA PENALTIES – PATRICK SAYS “BILL IS DEAD”

“Texas’ Republican lieutenant governor says he won’t support reducing penalties for small amounts of marijuana, calling it “a step toward legalization.”

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick’s opposition Tuesday followed a historic vote in the GOP-controlled Texas House to make possession of an ounce or less of the drug to a Class C misdemeanor.

Patrick, the Senate leader, called the bill “dead.” His disapproval underscores the resistance by Texas GOP leaders to relaxing marijuana laws even as the drug becomes increasingly legal elsewhere in the U.S. ” story by Allie Morris
